What is Google autocomplete?
Google autocomplete is the list of predictions that appears under the search box while you type. The predictions are based on real searches by other people, how popular and fresh a phrase is, and the language and location of the searcher. "Predictive search" and "autocomplete" are used for the same idea.
How the tool collects Google suggestions
LongTailLab asks Google for its suggestions for your seed, then repeats the request with every letter from a to z, with question words and with prepositions. It merges all the answers into one deduplicated list that you can select, copy or export to CSV.
Why autocomplete keywords are useful
- They are real searches, not invented ideas.
- They are long-tail by nature, with clearer intent and usually less competition.
- They are free, so you can test as many seeds as you want.
What autocomplete does not tell you
It does not show search volume, and the suggestions change with language and location. Check your shortlist in Google Keyword Planner or Google Trends before you commit to a topic.
How to use the Google autocomplete keyword tool
- Type a broad seed keyword.
- Keep Google ticked and switch on Alphabet soup, Question keywords and Prepositions.
- Run the search and select the phrases that fit your content.
- Copy them or export the CSV.
Beyond Google
The same seed can also be sent to YouTube, Bing, DuckDuckGo, Wikipedia and Amazon. Phrases that appear in several engines are worth a closer look.
Autocomplete, related searches and People Also Ask
Google shows demand in several places, and they answer different questions. Autocomplete shows what people are about to type. Related searches, at the bottom of the results, show what people searched next. People Also Ask shows full questions. A good keyword session uses all three, but autocomplete is the easiest to collect at scale, which is why this tool focuses on it. For the full picture of how the feature decides what to show, see how Google autocomplete works.
Expand one seed into hundreds of ideas
The most productive technique is to add a letter after your seed and read the new predictions: "coffee a", "coffee b" and so on. The generator does this automatically, which is the method described in our alphabet soup technique guide. You can also add prepositions such as "for", "with" and "without", or comparison words such as "vs" and "or", to reveal how people choose between options.
Clean and group the list
A raw list of several hundred phrases is only useful once it is organised. Remove duplicates and phrases that do not fit your site, then group the rest by topic: each group becomes one page or one section of a page. Keep the exact wording of the phrases you plan to target. If you need a method for this step, read how to organize keyword lists.
Choose the right country and language
Predictions depend on location and language. A seed typed in English for the United States gives different suggestions than the same seed for the United Kingdom or India. Pick the market where your readers or customers live, and repeat the search for any second market you serve.
Autocomplete is not autofill
People often confuse the two. Autocomplete predicts searches; autofill completes forms with saved data such as your address. Our short explainer on autocomplete vs autofill clears up the difference and the privacy implications of each.
